A Memory Called Empire is a political sci-fi novel with a main f/f romance, the best court intrigue I've read in months if not ever, and plot twists I didn't see coming. It's set in a space empire in which straight isn't the default, most of the cast is queer, and the worldbuilding is complex but never confusing - everything I've ever wanted/5. The characters in the Mirror Universe are aggressive, mistrustful and opportunistic in personality. Whereas the Star Trek universe depicts an optimistic future in which the Earth-based United Federation of Planets values peace, co-operation and exploration, episodes set in the Mirror Universe feature the human-dominated authoritarian Terran Empire which values war, despotism and conquest instead.

In The Mirror Empire, Hurley continues to impress with her world building and ability to create social and magical systems that are reminiscent of other works in the genre, but still uniquely her own. This work is definitely more epic in scope at pages than the physically lighter Bel Dame Apocrypha series/5(3). Tomorrow is the official release day for THE MIRROR EMPIRE, my fourth published novel and the first in a new epic fantasy series. Folks always want to know how you feel on book launch day, and the thing is, you know, I can tell you that on the *eve* of book launch day, I feel resigned. .

The Mirror Empire was one of those books that I grabbed on a whim at Powell’s and promptly forgot about. I’m glad I pulled it from the shelf, though, because it’s an extremely ambitious novel and, despite its shortcomings, and enjoyable read.
